Request for Proposals (RFP) – Nature-Based Approach Conceptual Design

York County Soil & Water Conservation District is seeking proposals from qualified consultants to develop conceptual designs for Nature-Based Approaches to address erosion and flooding hazards at two locations in Southern Maine.

The York County Soil & Water Conservation District (YCSWCD), in collaboration with the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve (WNERR) and the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), is working on a grant-funded project aimed at advancing nature-based approaches to protect the people, property, and environment of southern Maine from coastal climate hazards. To achieve this objective, the team has identified two potential sites suitable for implementing nature-based approaches to address erosion and flooding risks along the tidal shoreline of southern Maine.

Consultant scope of work includes:

  • Site Assessment
  • Identification of Suitable Nature-Based Strategies and Feasibility Assessment
  • Conceptual Design of Nature-Based Strategies(s) for Sites
  • Project Meetings

The total budget for consultant services is not to exceed $45,000.

Seasonal Field Technician

Posted April 11, 2025. The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time (40 hour/week) seasonal field technician position for 14 weeks during the 2025 summer field season. This position will support pre-enhancement monitoring at salt marsh restoration sites in southern Maine..

Position Goals: Collect and analyze environmental data to support ecological monitoring of a tidal marsh enhancement project. This monitoring will document pre-enhancement (baseline) conditions that inform design, support long-term evaluation, and guide adaptive management.

  • Dates: 14 weeks, approximately June - September 2025 (start and end dates can be flexible).
  • Minimum Qualifications: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, ability to walk and stand for long periods of time across uneven ground, ability to work outside under adverse conditions including heat, biting insects, traversing mud, and working around water, at least 2-3 years of completed undergraduate education in biology, environmental science, or related natural resource discipline, ability to work as part of a small field team.
  • Compensation and Benefits: $22.00/hour 40 hours per week. Mileage reimbursed as $0.70/mile. Housing is available at the Alheim Commons residential facility located on the Wells Reserve campus at a discounted rate.
